Lynnwood: EdCC gets $2.1 million

Edmonds Community College has received a $2.1 million grant to provide professional training to foreign students attending the college. The money, provided by the U.S. State Department, will pay for certificate classes and a cultural awareness program for 52 students from south Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Near East.

Fire Station 10 dedication Saturday

Snohomish County Fire District 1 will celebrate the grand opening of Fire Station 10, 3922 156th St. SW with a dedication and open house from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Activities start off with a dedication ceremony and flag-raising featuring the Fire District 1 Honor Guard and the Snohomish County Firefighters Pipes and Drums.

Everett: Workshop on secondhand stores

The city bans shops that sell secondhand items on certain streets in downtown Everett. The planning commission has scheduled a workshop on whether to modify existing rules at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the eighth floor of 2930 Wetmore Ave. They’ll discuss the appropriateness of allowing antique sales, consignment shops, speciality retail and other types of secondhand merchandise on Hewitt Avenue. Also on the agenda is a public hearing for the city’s transportation plan.

Navy base expands child care center

Naval Station Everett just opened a newly expanded child development center. The expansion added more space for toddlers, which allows the center to accept 28 more children. Total, the center can take 174 infants and toddlers. The center helps keep costs down for military families needing child care near base, especially single mothers. The $1 million expansion was paid for by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Everett High drama students to perform

Everett High School students later this month will perform “The Craving” by Don Zoldis.

The play has been described as “a complex emotional journey, with zombies.”

Performances are set for 7 p.m. May 28 and 29 as well as June 4 and 5. There also will be a 2 p.m. performance June 6.

The play will at the Everett High Little Theater, 2331 Hoyt Ave. Tickets are $10 or $7 with an ASB card.

Marysville: Volunteers to spruce up school

Volunteers including school staff, parents and students will help clean up the Allen Creek Elementary School campus on Saturday. Allen Creek’s PTSA worked with school leaders and custodian to plan the event.

It begins at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 6 p.m. The school is at 6505 60th Dr. NE.

Mukilteo: Art show participants sought

The Future of Flight center is sponsoring an aviation design and art show.

Accepted designs will be displayed in the show from June 15 to July 31. The deadline to apply is June 7. Submissions should be sent electronically, via regular mail or delivered in person. Each participant will receive an i-4innovation window-cling badge for taking part in the show.
