UW Bothell

Honored for community learning

The University of Washington’s Bothell campus is being honored for its involvement with community-based learning projects.

The university was recently named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service 2007 Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement.

Community-based learning projects at the Bothell campus include Space Huskies, which teams up university and grade school students to create their vision of a community on Mars. Another project is the Northshore Family Center, a volunteer program in which university students work to prepare kids for success in school.

Everett

City taking comments on new storm water plan

The city of Everett has developed a storm water management program to meet requirements of its state storm water permit. The city’s 2008 Stormwater Management Program is at: www.ci.everett.wa.us/pw.

The document describes actions the city will take through 2011 to maintain compliance with the storm water regulations, which are designed to reduce storm water runoff pollution to Everett’s waterways.

The state permit is a requirement of the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permits Program, which is part of the Federal Clean Water Act.

Some of the new federal rules that put tighter controls on treating storm water and pollutants that flow into streams and Puget Sound are being challenged in Washington by about 30 governmental entities, including Everett and Marysville.

The coalition of cities has pledged to spend up to $925,000 to fight the rules.
