Brier: Retirement ceremony planned

Snohomish County Fire District 1 Capt. Andy Speier is retiring after 32 years in the fire service.

A retirement ceremony to honor his career is set for 9 a.m. Tuesday at Brier Fire Station 18, 21206 Poplar Way.

Refreshments will be serv

ed at 9:30 a.m.

Guests can park in the south end of the Albertsons parking lot at 4301 212th St. SW in Mountlake Terrace. Shuttle service to the fire station begins at 8 a.m. Carpools are encouraged.

Speier worked with fire departments around the state and the country before coming to District 1 in 1991.

He plans to spend retirement teaching rescue classes and bicycling.

Edmonds: Special Olympics fundraiser

Edmonds police officers spent March 26 waiting tables at the Lynnwood Red Robin restaurant to raise money for Special Olympics Washington.

About 65 people, including local Special Olympics athletes and their families, came out to support the fundraiser, Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said.

Altogether, they raised $6,600. That’s one of the highest amounts raised at “Tip-a-Cop” events in Washington so far this year for Special Olympics.

Everett: Fifth-graders mark Arbor Day

Everett Mayor Ray Stephanson plans to join fifth-graders from Horizon Elementary School on Wednesday as they plant new trees at Walter E. Hall Park.

People are invited to watch a short ceremony and the tree planting from 1 to 2:15 p.m. The address is 1226 W. Casino Road.

The group will plant 22 crimson spire oak trees to create a boulevard along the park’s entry road, which leads to W.E. Hall Golf Course.

The tree, a cross between the English oak and the white oak, can grow up to 45 feet tall. In the autumn, its leaves turn rusty red.

Everett will receive its 16th annual designation as a Tree City USA from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Forestry class for landowners offered

Woodland owners are invited to attend a nine-week course on forestry stewardship, which meets from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays evenings through June 7 at the Washington State University Snohomish County Extension auditorium, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.

Class participants develop a personalized forest stewardship plan to be eligible for cost-share assistance programs and significant property tax reductions.

Whidbey: Genealogy group meets Tuesday

Whidbey Island Genealogical Searchers group plans to meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the fire station at 2720 Heller Road. Tom Laurenson plans to talk about Scottish migration with links to the American Revolution and North Carolina. All are welcome.
