Labor auction raises scholarship funds
The First Amendment Dinner and Auction earlier this month raised $822 for scholarships.
Organizers auctioned off artifacts from the regional labor movement, including rare posters, decades-old picket signs and a collection of unusual wooden-block union stamps.
Teachers at Cascade High School in Everett started the scholarship program in 2008, which is intended to recognize and encourage active support of First Amendment liberties.

Mountlake Terrace High School’s Jazz Ensemble 1 has been selected as one of 15 high school jazz bands in North America to participate in the Essentially Ellington Jazz Festival.
The festival, often called the “world series” of high school jazz festivals, is set for May at the Lincoln Center in New York City.
The only other band chosen from the area is Roosevelt High School of Seattle. Other participating bands are from Florida, Texas, Illinois, Massachusetts, California, Iowa, Wisconsin, Connecticut, California and Canada.
Snohomish: Higher speed limit on road
Snohomish County Public Works plans to increase the speed limit on Dubuque Road near the Pilchuck River bridge to 40 mph from 30 mph as of today.
People who live nearby asked for the change. County officials deemed the increase is reasonable, given current traffic patterns.
Members of the public who object to the change can file a written appeal to the clerk of the County Council by March 28. The clerk is located on the eighth floor of the county administration building east, 3000 Rockefeller Ave., Everett.
