Around the County: Maltby: Food bank needs volunteers

The Maltby Food Bank, which serves the southeast corner of Snohomish County, needs volunteers to help plan its fifth annual fundraiser.

The first planning meeting for the fundraiser is 6:30 p.m. Feb. 25 at the Maltby Cafe.

Everett: Chocolate gala and benefit

The 17th annual chocolate-lovers gala Lights, Camera, Chocolate, which is a fundraiser for Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County, is March 27.

The evening begins with more than 200 silent items up for bid, followed by a dinner, the Chocolate Dessert Dash and a live auction featuring emcee Bob Drewel, former county executive, and auctioneer April Brown.

Tickets are available through March 23. The event will be at the Everett Events Center. Tickets are $75 for individuals or $70 per person for couples. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Edmonds: School marks anniversary

Maplewood K-8 Parent Cooperative is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Former and current students, staff, families and friends are invited to attend an open house from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Maplewood, 8500 200th St. SW. in Edmonds.

Parking is limited. A shuttle bus is scheduled to run throughout the evening from College Place Elementary and College Place Middle School to Maplewood School.

Marysville: Learn about cosmetology

People can learn about Everett Community College’s cosmetology program at an open house and career fair from 1 to 3 p.m. March 2 at the EvCC School of Cosmetology in Marysville.

The school, 9315 State Ave., Suite G, in Marysville, offers a certificate in cosmetology and an associate of technical arts degree.

Students can attend full-time or part time.

Cosmetologists from local salons will discuss their careers and answer questions about the field at the open house. EvCC instructors, enrollment coordinators, and financial aid representatives will also be on hand to help those interested in the program.

EvCC cosmetology graduates must complete at least 1,730 hours of classes in preparation for the state licensing exams.

EvCC’s School of Cosmetology also offers a wide variety of salon services to the public, including the $25 spa package, which includes a manicure, pedicure and facial.

Stanwood: Flood help to farmers, businesses

Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Stanwood disaster recovery center is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays in the youth exhibit hall at the Stanwood Camano Community Fairgrounds, 6431 Pioneer Highway.

Business owners, homeowners and renters who had flood losses can register for disaster assistance by calling 800-621-3362 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. Online registration is available at www.disasterassistance.gov.

Financial assistance, from the Lake Stevens office of the Farm Service Agency, also is available for farmers and ranchers who have flood debris to remove or need to repair such things as fencing.
