OSO — Though the barn collapsed in the December snow, the Art in the Barn show continues Saturday.
When Brian Yantis went out the morning after Christmas to feed his family’s cattle on their small ranch about 10 miles east of Arlington, he was shocked to see that the hay barn had buckled under the weight of the heavy wet snow.
No one was hurt and no animals were harmed, but the structure’s damage put the fifth annual art show in jeopardy.
Yantis’ mother, Monica Yantis, is a painter and member of the Arlington Arts Council. She and her husband Ted have hosted the popular art show since its inception and now are set for another round of the event on Saturday and Sunday.
“It’s been a lot of work to get ready, but we’re having the art show in the ruins of the barn,” Monica Yantis said. “We were like a lot of people who had their insurance claims denied after the big snow. It’ll be awhile before we can rebuild.”
Sponsored by the arts council, Art in the Barn features more than 20 artists, and some plan to paint during the show.
Most of the artists and their work will be sheltered by canopies sitting on the barn’s concrete slab or in the Yantis family’s front yard.
“We are trying to remain positive,” Yantis said. “No one knows what to expect in this economy. It’s been a tough year.”
