Democratic state Sen. Margarita Prentice is helping lead a new group fighting the proposed Death With Dignity initiative to create a legal path to assisted suicide.
Prentice, a former nurse, is one of three names atop a press release issued Tuesday to announce the launch of The Coalition Against Assisted Suicide.
Duane French, spokesman for the group state in the press release:
“The judgment of people with a terminal illness is often clouded by depression. Assisting people at their most vulnerable point to end their lives is not compassion, it’s negligence.”
Plenty of individual groups will be opposing the measure too.
Larry Stickney, executive director of the Lynnwood-based Family Policy Institute of Washington wrote in an e-mail to me:
“While our hearts go out to those who suffer greatly from life threatening illnesses, we believe that euthanasia or mercy killing or “death with dignity”, no matter what you call it our how you package it, devalues human life and stops a beating heart before it’s time. We will be robust in our opposition to this measure!”
Supporters will file the paperwork for the initiative Wednesday morning.
