EVERETT – A woman was arrested Monday after police say she was seen inside a stolen car by the Everett Police Department’s new auto-theft task force.
A patrol officer discovered the stolen Chevy Corsica near Cedar and 21st streets and called the task force, according to Sgt. Jerry Strieck.
Detectives staked out the car for about 15 minutes. A woman leaving a house in the 2700 block of 21st Street jumped in the car and was trying to start it, Strieck said.
She was arrested for possession of stolen property. It wasn’t clear if she had stolen the car, Strieck said.
Police searched the house and arrested three other people. A man and woman were arrested for outstanding warrants. Another man was arrested for having drug paraphernalia.
Residents stood outside watching the arrests Monday evening.
“We can’t find parking most the time because the street is so full of stolen cars,” said Riley Kalk.
Everett Police Chief Jim Scharf formed the 12-person task force earlier this year, and has made catching auto thieves and preventing vehicle thefts a priority.
The number of cars reported stolen in Everett in June was lower than the same period last year.
Even so, auto theft in Everett is still on pace to exceed last year’s numbers. The increase mirrors a region-wide jump in auto theft.
The task force recently added two State Patrol troopers to combat the growing problem.
“We’re taking auto theft seriously in Everett. This is an example of what the task force is doing,” Strieck said.
