BELLINGHAM — The woman who died in an avalanche Friday while snowshoeing with two friends near Mount Baker has been identified as Jacqueline Eckstrom, 21, a senior at Western Washington University.
Eckstrom’s snowshoeing companions have been identified as Greg Bachmeier and Laurie Ballew, also students at WWU in their 20s.
They suffered injuries and were in stable condition Sunday night, a spokesman with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office said.
The three were trapped overnight about two miles south of the Mount Baker ski area and weren’t rescued until Saturday morning, when Bachmeier managed to dig himself out and contact skiers.
