BELLINGHAM — The cries of a 4-month-old baby awakened a local couple to a fire destroying their home.
No one was injured in the blaze early Wednesday at the house north of the city center.
Shortly before 5 a.m., George Harrington and Billie Clark were awakened by the crying of their infant son, Adam.
"Billie told me she thought someone was in the house, because you could hear this crashing downstairs like someone was throwing the TV around," Harrington told The Bellingham Herald. "I thought at first there was a burglar and I was preparing to go get in a fight or something, when I opened the door and all this black smoke rolled in."
Harrington guided Clark and the baby down a staircase and out the front door. A friend, who had been asleep in an upstairs bedroom, jumped from a second-story window to safety.
