A press release issued this morning states that former Gov. Booth Gardner will file the Washington “Death With Dignity” initiative at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
I wrote about this subject Sunday.
The proposed initiative would allow mentally competent adults diagnosed as terminally ill with six months or less to live to obtain and use lethal doses of medication.
According to the press release, Gardner is to be joined Wednesday by residents of Oregon and Washington with “personal experiences of helping a terminally ill loved one.”
Veteran Democrat strategists Christian Sinderman and Blair Butterworth are guiding the campaign. Last year, initiative supporters set up the It’s My Decision committee and by Dec. 1 had raised $253,000.
Much of that will likely go to professionals to gather the roughly 225,000 signatures of registered voters needed to qualify for the November ballot.
This initiative is nearly identical to Oregon’s 10-year-old law. You can get a lot of information on what’s happened there at this state-run Web site.
