SEATTLE — Another attempt to sell the historic ferry Kalakala has rusted out.
The backup bidder, a Seattle group, told the James G. Murphy auction company of Kenmore on Thursday it would not be buying the boat.
"We were waiting for them to bring in the check," said spokesman Terry Moore. "They came in and said they were not going to do it."
The winning bidder from Saturday’s auction is out of the picture since missing the initial payment, Moore said. "He defaulted. He had his chance."
Moore said he hasn’t heard from Charles Medlin since Tuesday. The Porterville, Calif., man — who put down a $25,000 deposit — has said he’s still interested in turning the boat into an attraction on the San Francisco waterfront.
The auction company was checking Thursday with the third-highest bidder, an Olympia man. Moore said he could not disclose the man’s name until the auction house had confirmed his interest. By late afternoon, that contact still had not been made.
Moore said it’s more likely that a bankruptcy judge will order another auction.
