Bear that bit woman on head hasn’t been spotted

KALISPELL, Mont. — State wildlife officials haven’t found the bear that attacked a woman while she jogged with her dogs last week on U.S. Forest Service land in northwestern Montana.

Fish, Wildlife and Parks investigator Brian Somers says the bear ran from the trees north of Columbia Falls and attacked one of the dogs Thursday. The woman yelled at the bear, then lay on her side. She said the bear bit her several times above the hip area before turning back to the dogs.

Somers says that when the woman sat up, the bear returned and bit her on the head several times before retreating into the woods. She believes it was a black bear. She was treated and released from the hospital.

The bear trap has been removed, and the Forest Service plans to reopen the area Monday.
