Bellingham man fatally stabbed, 4 injured in fight

BELLINGHAM – A 26-year-old man was stabbed to death and four other people were injured when a fight broke out at a rental house, police say.

One of the injured was booked into Whatcom County Jail after he was treated at a local hospital.

Killed Wednesday night was Samuel Harrow of Bellingham, police Lt. Dac Jamison said.

Stephane Joseph Lesperance, 25, was being held on $500,000 bail in connection with the stabbing death, police said. His hometown was not available.

Jamison described the wounded as a woman with minor injuries, a man with a head abrasion, another man with an unspecified wound and the man later jailed, who was bleeding.

Trooper cleared: Kitsap County prosecutors have decided that a Washington State Patrol trooper was justified in the shooting death of a Port Angeles woman. Trooper Ron Kessler, based in Bremerton, shot Rosa Hammer, 27, on Aug. 9 during a struggle in which he was wounded in the hand. She was a passenger in a truck stopped on Highway 16 in Gorst. The State Patrol said Hammer pulled a gun from her purse and fired at Kessler when he tried to arrest her for having marijuana in her backpack.

Giraffe dies: The Woodland Park Zoo’s new baby giraffe died Thursday, the zoo said. The 5 1/2-foot-tall male was born Saturday and showed signs of weakness Wednesday, the zoo said. The mother’s milk had been slow to come in and the calf did not receive maternal antibodies, usually present in the first milk, to protect it from infection. The calf was the first offspring of its 12-year-old mother, Mahali, and 5-year-old father, Johari.

Memorial planned: The U.S. Forest Service plans to build a memorial in the Chewuch River canyon to honor the four firefighters who died in the Thirty-mile fire. There will be a plaque, a bench, a paved trail and some parking space, said Jennifer Zbyszewski, an environmental coordinator for the Methow Valley Ranger District in the Okanogan and Wenatchee national forests. The money has been requested from Congress, and plans are to dedicate the memorial July 10, the first anniversary of the deaths of Tom Craven, 30, of Ellensburg, and Devin Weaver, 21, Jessica Johnson, 19, and Karen FitzPatrick, 18, all of Yakima.

Moose kill: Wildlife agents in northern Idaho are searching for the killers of 15 huge moose in the past month. Six moose were killed in Shoshone and Benewah counties in the past week. While the antlers were removed from two bulls, thousands of pounds of meat were left behind. In the past month, 15 moose have been killed by poachers in northern Idaho, a state wildlife official said. Last year, the agency recorded 17 moose that were illegally shot.
