EVERETT – One person died about 10 a.m. today in a bizarre, two-vehicle crash that shut down two lanes of southbound I-5 at the interchange with Highway 526.
A Dodge Ram pickup that was southbound on the freeway exited to 526, but as it approached the ramp, the truck continued straight through a painted area that separates the two roads, Washington State Patrol Sgt. Barry Kirk said. The truck continued onto a grassy area, entered the collector lane for Everett Mall Way, then struck and dislodged three concrete barriers. The pickup then went airborne over the barriers and landed on the southbound shoulder of the freeway, then proceeded into the second lane, where it collided with a southbound semi-truck, Kirk said.
The collision with the semi spun the pickup clockwise, sending it back onto the shoulder and collided with more concrete barriers. The driver was ejected and pinned under the pickup, Kirk said. The man, who appears to be from Marysville, died at the scene, Kirk said.
The semi driver was uninjured.
The patrol shut down two right lanes and the commuter lane was being used for traffic, according to the state Department of Transportation.
No other details were available at midday.
Investigators don’t know why the pickup ran off the road.
