EVERETT — The owner of a boat in the south Port of Everett marina was sleeping on board Saturday morning when he woke to the smell of smoke.
The man tried to retrieve his fire extinguisher, but the boat fire had spread.
Everett Fire crews were dispatched shortly after 5:30 a.m., department spokesman Assistant Chief Glen Martinsen said.
Firefighters found the boat’s windows broken from the heat and the cabin was engulfed in flames, Martinsen said. They quickly extinguished the fire and kept it from spreading to the dock or other boats.
One of the engines started on its own and would not shut off, possibly because of an electrical malfunction, but firefighters were able to shut it down by cutting its fuel supply. The twin-diesel boat’s hull appeared to be intact but the interior of the cabin suffered extensive damage, Martinsen said.
No loss estimate was available. More information is to be available from the fire marshal’s office on Tuesday, he said.
