EVERETT — Investigators combed the area around the U.S. 2 trestle Monday trying to learn what happened to a young woman whose body was found on the eastbound offramp to Ebey Island.
The woman, who was in her mid-20s to early 30s, may be the victim of a hit-and-run accident, Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis said.
Investigators Monday were working to identify the woman and piece together what happened before she died. The Snohomish County Medical Examiner was expected to conduct an autopsy soon to determine the time and the cause of her death.
Construction workers first noticed the body just before 2 p.m. and called for help, Francis said.
“Her wounds are consistent with being struck by a vehicle,” he said. Investigators hope tire marks and car parts found around the body will help identify the suspect vehicle.
The woman was found in a gore point, the triangular area between the offramp and the freeway, enclosed by a two-feet-high Jersey barrier. Passing drivers may not have seen the body, Francis said.
The offramp to Home Acres Road was closed Monday afternoon as crews searched the area for evidence. Snohomish County Sheriff’s divers also were called to help look for clues underwater, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
The divers continued to work for hours. “We want to make absolutely sure there is nothing else we missed and no one else involved,” Francis said.
On the ground, investigators found what looks like a class ring about 10 feet away from the body, but they don’t know if it belonged to the woman, he said.
