DARRINGTON — Darrington High School alum and sports booster Kevin Ashe can’t say enough good about the new book, “Remembering the B.”
By Spokane author Jim Stinson, the book details the Washington state B league basketball tournaments from 1923 to 2010. Teams such as Darrington, Concrete, La Conner and other westside small schools play a big part, even though the league has perhaps always been dominated by Eastern Washington schools.
“It’s a fantastic book,” said Ashe, who also played B league basketball. “It’s great for all of us small town folk who think basketball is heaven.”
The 464-page book lists every player who ever participated in the state B tournament, stories on some of those players, their coaches and many of the championship games, along with tons of statistics. More than 475 photos and the logos of all 307 schools that played in the tournament over the years are included.
Stinson, a former basketball coach, calls the state B basketball tournament “the greatest tournament ever held.” It’s always a book about rural communities and the popularity of the tournament, he said. All three of his children attended B league schools.
The forward to the book is written by well-known Northwest author Sherman Alexie, who played basketball in the B league for Reardan High School.
Stinson plans an appearance from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mountain Loop Books and Coffee shop at 1085 Darrington St. He plans to sell and sign books, and Ashe added, is offering a special price for people from Darrington.
