A 26-year-old Bothell-area man died in a hiking accident Monday afternoon after slipping on a rock and falling into the Skykomish River.
The man was hiking with three friends around 4:30 p.m. near Deception Falls off U.S. 2 east of Skykomish when the accident happened, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
He slipped on a mossy rock and tumbled down a 75-foot rocky drop. He fell into the Skykomish River and was swept 500 to 1,000 feet downstream, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Sharon Rieg said.
Another hiker who heard the victim’s companions yelling jumped into the river and pulled the man out. The hikers started CPR, which was continued by medics when they arrived.
The man, whose name was not released Monday night, was pronounced dead at the scene after responders were unable to revive him.
