Bothell city council, position 5

Age: 41

Occupation: Trooper, Washington State Patrol

Political experience: Incumbent, eight years on council.

Work experience: I’ve served on many council committees at the city and regional levels.

Personal experience: As an officer for 17 years, I have dedicated my career to making hard choices and handling tough issues. I identify the issues, recognize the impacts of all the options, evaluate public concerns and comments, and make an informed decision.

Top 3 issues: 1. Encourage additional retail in the already identified retail corridors of the city. 2. Attract and locate a dealership in the new car dealership overlay zone. 3. Enhance the major arterials and collectors in the city, and continue to pressure the counties and state to address the regional traffic issues.

Why voters should pick me: I am the only candidate from north Bothell and will represent your opinions. I oppose locating the wastewater treatment plant in north Bothell and will work to limit increased densities in the city. Traffic congestion remains the single biggest issue; I will focus our primary improvements on our arterials and primary transportation corridors.

Fun facts: I am coordinating our student exchange program with our sister city in Japan.

Age: 41

Occupation : Supervising civil engineer

Political experience: Bothell Planning Commission for five years, Bothell City Council/Planning Commission Work Program Committee, Senior Housing Committee, Bothell Design and Construction Standards Committee, Motor Vehicles Sales Overlay Committee.

Work experience: 15 years experience in municipal public works. Management of the city of Seattle’s street design section. Trained in advanced management, leadership and facilitation. Member of Washington State City/County Design Standards Committee. Member of the American Public Works Association. Registered Professional Civil Engineer.

Personal experience: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, University of Washington. Master’s degree in structural engineering, Stanford.

Top 3 issues: 1. Taxes: Government must live within its means, just as ordinary citizens do. I will work aggressively to limit tax and fee increases. 2. Transportation: The city council is proposing to divert traffic from arterials and encouraging it to use neighborhood/residential streets. I am opposed to this proposal. Our effort should be placed on ensuring the existing arterial system is as efficient as possible. 3. GMA-required citywide Comprehensive Plan update: In 2002, the city council will reconsider almost all land use and development regulations. These decisions will impact every citizen for years to come. The Comprehensive Plan is suppose to be a reflection of the will of the people. I will work hard to make that true.

Why voters should pick me: My professional experience together with my years of participation on the Planning Commission provides a solid foundation to be an effective city council member. I have earned a reputation as being a dedicated, honest and hard working leader. I am committed to actively represent the interests of the citizens of this community.

Fun facts: Little League and soccer coach.

Candidate did not return the survey.
