BOTHELL — An Ellensburg man was killed Friday and another was listed in critical condition after the driver lost control, his car flew off a road and crashed down an embankment.
Travis G. Olson, 24, died at the scene after he suffered a severe head injury, Snohomish County medical examiner’s chief investigator Leon Reichle said.
A 23-year-old man suffered head and abdominal injuries and was listed in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg-Hanson said.
The crash occurred about 1:38 a.m. Friday on 228th Street SW at Locust Way, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said. A caller reported to 911 that a car had gone over an embankment.
Deputies found a Geo convertible, she said. The car had been descending a hill toward an intersection.
"It’s unclear what happened," Jorgensen said. "The car somehow went airborne and went down an embankment.
"They might have been unfamiliar with the road and the intersection might have been a surprise," she said.
The crash destroyed the car.
Olson’s death was the 14th traffic fatality this year in unincorporated Snohomish County.
"Sadly, it appears that the numbers are up," Jorgensen said.
