MONROE — A 15-year-old male who dove out of a raft on Flowing Lake and could not make it to shore was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where he died Sunday evening.
The young man and his sister were in a 12-foot raft on Flowing Lake, located north of Monroe and east of Snohomish.
"He asked her, ‘Should I swim to shore?’ She said ‘no,’ " said Snohomish County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen.
Nevertheless, he jumped in and started to swim. His sister asked if he was all right. "He seemed to be fine," Jorgensen said.
His sister, who is also 15, brought the raft to shore thinking he had returned to the edge of the lake, Jorgensen said. But when she couldn’t find him, she became distraught and began yelling for help.
Her older brother and an unidentified man in a motor boat in the lake heard her cries for help. They went to the spot where the young man had dived into the water and saw his body on the lake’s bottom, Jorgensen said.
Both men dove down, brought up the body, and began resuscitation.
Medical help from the Snohomish and Monroe fire departments was summoned at 5:30 p.m. said Mike Hill, a Monroe Fire Department captain.
The older brother and sister are from Monroe, Jorgensen said, but the hometown of the young man taken to Harborview could not be immediately confirmed because he also has family members from Seattle.
Jorgensen said investigators were not able to immediately determine what caused the young man’s troubles in the water, preventing him from reaching shore.

Motorcyclist dies: A 54-year-old Everett man died Sunday when his motorcycle collided with a car, the 15th person to die this year in a motor vehicle accident in unincorporated Snohomish County.
The collision, which occurred at the intersection of Airport Road and Admiralty Way, was reported at 5:18 p.m.
The man was transported by Fire District 1 to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he was pronounced dead, said Leslie Hynes, public information officer for the fire district.
The name of the man was not available Sunday evening.
The motorcyclist was eastbound on Airport Road, ran a red light and hit a Ford Mustang that was turning westbound onto Admiralty Way, said Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen.
The driver of the car, an unidentified female, was not injured, she said.
