A 12-year-old boy told police he brought a gun to Meadowdale Middle School to scare other students, according to charging papers filed in Snohomish County juvenile court Monday.
The boy is charged with being in possession of a firearm, a felony. He was arrested Nov. 9 – the day after he allegedly carried the unloaded .45-caliber Colt to school in his backpack.
He told police he “was going to use (it) to scare kids that wanted to beat (him) up,” charging papers read.
“I only would have scared them if they had started anything with me,” according to court documents.
The Herald does not typically name juveniles charged with crimes.
The boy showed the gun to another boy, 12, during the school day. He asked his classmate to hold the gun because he was afraid the principal would find the gun.
The second boy put the gun in his locker and later asked a girl, 14, to put the gun in her backpack.
The girl eventually returned the gun to the boy who brought it and he took it home.
School officials learned of the incident after school let out for the day, Edmonds School District spokeswoman Debbie Jakala said.
The boy was arrested at school the following day. His friends were also cited; no charges have been filed against them but prosecutors continue to review their cases, deputy prosecutor Adam Cornell said.
All three were temporarily expelled from school. Since then, the boy who brought the gun has been expelled for at least a year, Jakala said. No decision has been made about the other two.
