BELLINGHAM — The Whatcom County prosecutor’s office is preparing charges against two boys accused of setting the fire that destroyed a historic building in Lynden.
The boys, 13 and 14, were arrested Tuesday for investigation of burglary, trespassing and reckless burning. No one was injured in Monday’s fire at the Delft Square mall.
The 14-year-old is a Lynden Middle School student and the other is a former student.
Whatcom County Prosecutor Dave McEachran says the fire apparently started when the boys were lighting paper and books in a makeshift ashtray.
