BRASILIA, Brazil — Brazil’s foreign minister says a $5 billion fighter jet purchase is being delayed by budget cuts.
Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota says Brazil’s president needs more time to weigh the decision in light of $30 billion in spending cuts this year. He didn’t indicate when a decision might come.
The Rafale jet from France’s Dassault is competing against Sweden’s Gripen NG from Saab AB and U.S.-based Boeing Co.’s F-18 Super Hornet.
French Foreign Minister Michele Aillot-Marie is in Brazil Tuesday and pushing the Rafale. She’s emphasizing a total technology transfer as part of the deal, a key issue for Brazil.
But the U.S. and Sweden have also said they would agree to a technology transfer if the Boeing or Saab were chosen.
