BRIER — A house fire in Brier displaced six people Wednesday, according to fire officials.
Around 10 a.m., Snohomish County Public Utility District workers noticed black smoke coming from the back of a house in the 3000 block of 224th Place SW, South County Fire spokesperson Leslie Hynes said.
Richard “Red” Jensen lived in the bottom floor of the house with his wife. He went into the hall downstairs, opened the garage door and saw the area filled with black smoke, Jensen said.
Jensen, 80, had lived in the house for the past 4 ½ years. His son and daughter-in-law owned the house and lived upstairs, he said. Two other people also lived there, but at the time of the fire, only Jensen and his wife were home.
They both made it out safely and there were no injuries. A dog and four cats were also in the house. The dog was in the care of a neighbor, and it is believed the cats also made it out safely, according to the residents.
Firefighters arrived within 10 to 15 minutes. They “completely extinguished” the fire in another 10 minutes, Hynes said.
Firefighters kept the fire contained to the garage and prevented it from spreading to nearby houses. Six people were displaced from the fire, Hynes said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation Wednesday, but investigators believed it was accidental.
