Bryant fire station gets security grant

Snohomish County Fire District 18 in Bryant received $113,011 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to enhance operations and firefighter safety. The Bryant department, which covers 52 square miles north of Arlington, was one of 34 communities throughout the state that received the latest round of homeland security money.

Art Day lets kids get creative

Art Day 2004, an interactive, creative experience for young people, will be 9:45 a.m.-1:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Edmonds Center for the Arts, 410 Fourth Ave. N.

The event features an all-day experience for approximately 400 Edmonds School District students to explore a variety of career opportunities in the arts. Classes offered include soapstone etching, poetry, cartooning, African dance and singing, Indian drumming, mime and kite making.

The event is presented by Powerful Partners, Edmonds Community College and Leadership Snohomish County.

Life Changes Ministry to open

The Life Changes Ministry’s Community Center grand opening is 6-8 p.m. Friday at 2820 Hewitt Ave.

There will be a dessert bar, tours of the new building and an overview of all the ways the organization interacts with the community.

Council to hear budget comments

The Everett City Council at its meeting Wednesday will have the second public hearing for Mayor Ray Stephanson’s proposed 2005 budget. The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall chambers, 3002 Wetmore Ave.

Lost Lake plans a holiday bazaar

The Lost Lake 19th annual November bazaar will be 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Lost Lake on Camano Island. Take Highway 532 through Stanwood to E. Camano Drive. Stay left on E. Camano Drive and follow signs to the clubhouse at 1649 Lake Drive, Camano Island.

China travel slide show at library

Deon Matzen, an instructor at Skagit Valley College’s South Whidbey campus, will present a slide show and discussion about daily life in Beijing and travel throughout China.

The show will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Freeland Library, 5495 Harbor Ave.

Matzen was an exchange instructor to Beijing Foreign Studies University during the 2001-02 school term. During that time, she and her husband had many opportunities to travel and meet people.

The program is part of the Sno-Isle Libraries’ program, “Two Counties, One Book,” which is encouraging residents of Snohomish and Island counties to read and discuss “Balzac and the Little Seamstress,” by Dai Sijie.

Parks board will meet tonight

The Lynnwood Parks and Recreation Board will discuss the proposed city community center and a plan to have a teen representative on the parks board at its meeting tonight. The Monroe Chamber of Commerce will have its monthly membership luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 9 at the Rock Church, 16891 146th St. SE. Development is hearing topic

The Mukilteo hearing examiner will conduct two hearings beginning at 7 p.m. Nov. 10.

The hearings will take place in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 4480 Chennault Beach Road.

One hearing will address an application for a conditional-use permit for an eight-lot cottage housing subdivision on a parcel at 8420 44th Ave. W., just south of 84th Avenue W.

The other hearing is to consider an application for a 108-lot subdivision on 40 acres at 4430 Harbour Pointe Blvd.
