ARLINGTON — A revamped N. Olympic Avenue debuted Saturday with new sidewalks, wider streets and freshly painted storefronts.
After more than 25 years of conversations about reÂbuilding N. Olympic AveÂnue, workers finally finÂished major reconstruction of the street last week.
The thoroughfare through historic Arlington was rebuilt over a year in one of the city’s biggest reconstruction projects in recent memory.
Here’s a by-the-numbers look at the massive project:
2 phases divided the project. The first phase involved removing storage tanks buried underneath Olympic Avenue. The second phase involved tearing up the street and replacing it.
18 trees were removed during construction. 45 trees were planted along the street after the bulk of the road work was complete, leaving 27 more trees downtown than there were before the project.
5,200 tons of gravel were imported for the project.
Nearly $4.5 million in tax money was budgeted for the reconstruction.
29,000 feet of pipe were installed for water, sewer, drainage and electrical needs.
1,550 cubic yards of concrete were used to make new curbs and sidewalks.
8,570 tons of asphalt were laid on the roadway and in a parking lot.
48 lights were installed: 35 pedestrian street lights and 13 intersection lights.
