MARTINEZ, Calif. — A Northern California man who authorities say orchestrated a woman’s rape in part because she was a lesbian has been sentenced to more than 400 years to life in prison.
A Contra Costa County jury convicted 36-year-old Humberto Salvador of rape in concert, hate crime enhancements and other charges in connection with the 2008 attack. Authorities say Salvador attacked the woman as she walked to her apartment in Richmond, and he and two gang members sexually assaulted her in a car that had a rainbow sticker on it. The victim testified that Salvador kept asking her whether she liked men.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that a prosecutor read a statement before a judge sentenced Salvador on Friday that described the victim as having lost the will to live.
The two other defendants have also been sentenced.
