LOS ANGELES — The California lottery is holding a one-time-only free drawing with $1 million in prizes to make up for a scratch game goof in which tickets were sold after the grand prizes were gone.
Residents over age 18 have until March 18 to enter the drawing. The contest is free and people may enter as often as they want.
Lottery officials previously said that only those who played the Scratchers game — California’s most popular lottery contest — would be eligible. They later admitted there was no way to check.
Officials said 240 prizes, ranging from $1,000 to $25,000, will be offered. The money will come from the lottery’s administrative budget and will not affect lottery revenue given to public schools.
The contest comes months after lottery officials admitted that tickets for 11 Scratchers game had been sold since 1996 even though the grand prizes had been awarded.
