EVERETT – Shamae Campbell pounded the pavement for more than three weeks, determined to sell more Campfire USA candy than anyone else in the land.
She sold 2,606 boxes. Chocoholics and dentists rejoiced, but would it be enough?

In past years, she’d won third nationwide, even second, but darn it – never first.
The count came in. She sold enough Creamy Smooth Mint Patties, Almond Roca and P-Nuttles to clinch the title, and to pay her way to Camp Killoqua next summer. Incidentally, at $5 a box, she brought in a tasty $13,030 for Campfire USA.
The salesgirl galore is a cross-country runner who listens to the Black-Eyed Peas, shops at Rave and never leaves home without her cell phone. She may be 13, but so far she’s the good kind of teenager, said her parents, John and Becky Campbell.
Her sales pitch: The smiling middle-schooler stands in front of a store holding one of her many signs.
“One free box with each $5 donation,” one said. “Inventory reduction sale,” said another. People chuckle. Then they reach for their wallets.
“I’m really thankful that everybody that bought candy from me bought it, cause it, like, it helped me to make my goal,” said Campbell, an Eisenhower Middle School student.
Shamae “The Candy Champ” Campbell plans to sell candy again next year.
Hey, Willy Wonka, watch your back.
