PORT ANGELES — The tribal canoe journey is visiting Port Angeles on Tuesday as it continues this summer’s paddle around Washington waters.
It includes a canoe that capsized Monday near Port Townsend, tossing nine pullers into the water. They were rescued by the Coast Guard.
The Peninsula Daily News reports the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe is hosting the canoes at this stop.
The journey is an annual cultural event in which canoes from Northwest tribes paddle to reservations and other tribal sites on Puget Sound and the Washington coast.
This year’s Paddle to Quinault is scheduled to end Aug. 1 at with celebrations at Taholah.
