CASHMERE — A Cashmere man was arrested Thursday after a large homemade bomb capable of killing "lots of people" was found in his residence.
Jordy Douglas Lewis, 24, was arrested in Yakima and booked into the Chelan County Regional Justice Center on suspicion of unlawful possession of a bomb, Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum said.
"This large of a device, as well as the things that were put in it, would cause extensive damage to property and certainly would kill someone or lots of people," he said.
The device, contained in a 3-pound coffee can, included a cannon fuse and shotgun shell pellets, he said. The sheriff declined to identify the explosive material.
A bomb squad from the State Patrol "rendered the explosive device safe" after arriving at the scene about 7:15 p.m., Harum said.
Residents of six nearby homes were asked to leave.
Harum said the bomb was made of common household items but was "very complex."
"It was not your little firecracker," he said.
Harum said there was no indication Lewis was going to use the device on "someone or some place."
The sheriff said he did not know of a motive.
Deputies seized computer equipment, shotgun shells and other items from the home, he said. No other suspects are being sought, he said.
