EVERETT – Entertainment, food and games will be free at at least five locations today as local organizations celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
The South Everett Neighborhood Association and its partner, Familias Unidas, will welcome a Mount Vernon dance troupe to perform ancient Aztec and other indigenous routines, said Everett Barr, an AmeriCorps Vista worker with Familias Unidas.
There will be music, games and food throughout the rest of the day.
It’s the fifth annual Cinco de Mayo celebration the organization has hosted. This year’s event will take place at Everett Community College. At least 600 people are expected to attend. Free bus passes to the event are available through the South Everett Neighborhood Center.
At the same time, the YMCA of Snohomish County will host celebrations at four locations throughout the county.
The Marysville branch will present the Heather Clan Dancers, an Irish- and Scottish-style dance troupe, along with food from nine different countries.
The Monroe branch will feature cultural exhibits and arts and crafts. Visitors to the Mukilteo branch can learn to salsa dance and watch exhibitions of belly dancing and Japanese drumming.
At the Southeast Family branch in south Everett, there will be food, arts and crafts and music.
The downtown Everett branch is planning to coordinate with the Southeast Everett branch for a free diversity celebration later this month, said Colleen Temple, marketing director for the YMCA of Snohomish County.
“We’re doing this to build awareness and celebrate the diversity within our various communities,” she said.
