A Snohomish-area lawyer’s attempt to unseat Snohomish County Prosecuting Attorney Jim Krider picked up three more endorsements this week.
Janice Ellis, 42, a former deputy prosecutor and assistant attorney general, was endorsed Tuesday by the Edmonds Police Officers Association.
On Wednesday, the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association announced it is backing Ellis. Then, on Thursday afternoon, the Snohomish County Labor Council, AFL/CIO, endorsed the challenger.
Ellis, a Democrat, already has been endorsed by the unionized deputy prosecutors in Krider’s office, the Snohomish County Deputy Sheriff’s Association and the Lynnwood Police Officer’s Guild.
"I think the endorsements demonstrate two things," Ellis said Thursday. "Particularly, the law and justice community recognizes there needs to be a change in leadership (in the prosecutor’s office), and it demonstrates they have confidence in me, that I can be that leader."
Krider, 60, a Republican, said he wasn’t surprised to see the labor council backing Ellis, but said it troubles him that neither of the police agencies to back the challenger this week had sought his input.
Krider said he thinks that is "really a strange way" of doing things.
The incumbent said his campaign kickoff event Wednesday in Everett was attended by numerous supporters, including deputy prosecutors who handle civil lawsuits. Krider said he also has received early support from the Snohomish-Camano Board of Realtors and the Affordable Housing Council.
Edmonds police detective Don Kinney said officers in his department believe Ellis will work more cooperatively with police.
"She seems to understand the problems at the prosecutor’s office, and she has a plan to solve those problems," he said.
