BOISE, Idaho — Prosecutors have dismissed a vehicular manslaughter charge filed against a former Payette County deputy who was involved in a fatal crash while responding to an emergency call in October 2011.
Experts who reviewed the crash that killed 65-year-old Barry Johnson of New Plymouth disagreed on several factors, including the speed the deputy was driving and whether the victim’s blood-alcohol level had an effect.
KTVB-TV reported that because of the discrepancies, the special prosecutor dropped the charge against Scott Sloan on March 3. His trial had been scheduled to start Monday.
Dash camera video provided by Sloan’s attorney shows Sloan passing cars on a two-lane road as he traveled with his siren on. Johnson turned left into his driveway as the deputy tried to pass him.
