EVERETT – A man who allegedly tried to run down police officers was arrested after a chase on I-5 Friday morning.
State Patrol troopers shut down both directions of the freeway near Everett Mall Way about 9 a.m. while police searched for the suspect.
The incident began about 8:45 a.m. when Everett officers received a report that a man was spray-painting the roof of a black Ford Bronco on the east end of Howard Avenue.
A check of the Bronco’s license plate indicated that the vehicle had been stolen, Everett Sgt. Boyd Bryant said.
As police approached, the man, 34, jumped inside the Bronco and attempted to run down the officers, Bryant said.
An officer fired multiple times at the vehicle, flattening a tire. The man continued to drive about 100 yards behind the Majestic View Apartments to a dead end.
He jumped out, climbed over a fence and ran onto the freeway, Bryant said.
Troopers shut down the freeway, police dogs were brought in to track the man and a plane searched from the sky. Traffic was backed up for miles for about 30 minutes during the morning commute.
The man was eventually caught along the freeway and arrested.
He was booked into the Snohomish County Jail. No officers will be placed on administrative leave, Bryant said.
Detectives continue to investigate. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the police tip line at 425-257-8450.
