TULALIP – A 2-year-old boy who ran unattended down a driveway and onto Marine Drive was struck by a car and died Saturday, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office reported.
The boy died at the scene after family members and good Samaritans, including a Tulalip Tribal police officer and an off-duty firefighter, gave medical aid trying to save the boy.
The toddler was at a home in the 900 block of Marine Drive. It was not known whether the boy lived at the home or was visiting.
The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. when the boy ran 100 feet down the driveway and into the road when he was struck by a 2000 Kia Sephia sedan, said sheriff’s office spokesman Rich Niebusch. The sheriff’s collision unit is handling the investigation. Niebusch said the driver of the car had not exceeded the 35-mph speed limit.
Family members tried to help the child. A tribal police officer then arrived and gave aid, followed by an off-duty Fire District 15 firefighter who just happened upon the scene in his own vehicle, said Deputy Fire Chief Laine Hogle.
Aid was continued by Fire District 15 personnel but with no success.
Neither the child’s name nor that of the driver are being released. The driver, a 25-year-old woman from Marysville, was not injured, Niebusch said.
