The United States said Tuesday that it was sending environmental experts to help China cope with a river-borne toxic spill that is approaching Russia’s Far East, while Beijing promised to work closely with Moscow to limit the damage. The benzene slick, from a chemical plant explosion, has been moving along the frigid Songhua River since Nov. 13 and is expected to reach the Russian city of Khabarovsk early next week.

A 10-year-old girl in southern China’s Ziyuan County has tested positive for the deadly H5N1 virus, the government said Tuesday, making her the country’s fourth human bird flu case.
