MARYSVILLE — More than a dozen Marysville churches plan to give away thousands of dollars in school supplies, haircuts and food at an annual event that draws thousands of people.
Summer Jubilee is set to begin at 10 a.m. today at the Tulalip Amphitheatre, just west of I-5 in Quil Ceda Village. The area will be stocked with barbecues and food, a stage for bands and dancers, a skateboarding area, giant bouncy toys, and other attractions.
The churches behind the day apply for grants and hold fundraisers to pay for everything.
“It costs $18 per child, and we plan on having 5,000 students,” said Judi Johnston, Summer Jubilee event coordinator. “The biggest portion of that money is for school supplies.”
Every year, pastors of those churches say the event is meant to promote a community atmosphere in Marysville.
“God’s love is always good,” Johnston said. “We just want to be an expression of God’s love for everyone.”
Last year, the event drew as many as 15,000 people, Johnston said. Due to budget constraints this year, she said, the churches didn’t do as much advertising. She expects between 8,000 and 10,000 people to attend, including the 5,000 students she expects to give school supplies to.
Churches involved include Turning Point Church, Judah Praise Center, Allen Creek Community Church, Marysville First Assembly, Marysville Free Methodist, Marysville United Methodist. There are 15 churches involved in the event, Johnston said.
Parking is available at Quil Ceda Village, and a shuttle will transport people from a parking lot at Boom City on 27th Avenue NE. The event is scheduled to end at 4 p.m.
