EVERETT — More than two weeks after election day, three races in Snohomish County are headed for a recount.
According to the latest count, Monroe City Council contenders Jim Kamp and Mitch Ruth are tied with 1,573 votes each.
The City Council races in Lynnwood and Mukilteo also would qualify for recounts if the most current tally stand.
In Mukilteo, Terry Preshaw trails incumbent Emily Vanderwielen by 19 votes. In Lynnwood, Van AuBuchon leads Jim Smith by 13 votes.
The latest count was released Tuesday afternoon.
A machine recount is triggered when the final vote count between two candidates is less than one-half of 1 percent. A hand recount occurs when the difference between candidates is less than one-quarter of 1 percent.
In Darrington, mayor candidates Joyce Jones and Dan Rankin are nine votes apart, with Rankin leading. That’s outside the recount range for that race, where only 363 ballots were cast, said Garth Fell, Snohomish County elections manager.
The official results of the election are due Nov. 29.
Only about 20 ballots were left to count as of Tuesday, Fell said. The election department also may hear from a few voters whose ballots weren’t signed or whose signatures didn’t match the signatures on file.
If the Monroe race remains tied, workers will go through all the ballots by hand.
“We certainly have seen ties in the past,” Fell said. “The larger the district, the more rare it is.”
