PORT ANGELES — A Clallam County Superior Court jury has convicted a Washington state prison inmate of assaulting a corrections officer with a homemade knife.
The state attorney general’s office said inmate Carlos Avalos was convicted Friday in Port Angeles of second-degree assault for repeatedly stabbing the guard with a 4-inch metal knife or “shank” at the Clallam Bay Corrections Center.
The officer was able to activate his body alarm and use his pepper spray. Other officers arrived to help him.
The attorney general’s office says the injured man suffered multiple cuts to his face, head, neck, hands and torso, including a long gash on his face and a cut to his throat.
Avalos was already serving a 10-year sentence for attacking a juvenile correctional facility counselor with a shank in 2012.
The attorney general’s office prosecuted the case at the request of the Clallam County prosecutor’s office.
Sentencing is scheduled Feb. 25.
