VANCOUVER, Wash. — Two men wrongfully convicted of a 1993 rape and imprisoned for 17 years will be getting $10.5 million from Clark County, Wash.
The Columbian reported that the county and lawyers for 57-year-old Larry Davis of Vancouver and 49-year-old Alan Northrop of Woodland settled the case Friday, nine days into a federal jury trial in Tacoma.
The newspaper said the county agreed to pay the men $5.25 million each out of its own coffers because its insurer declined to pay any settlement or verdict related to the case.
A statement from the men’s lawyers said post-conviction DNA testing of 27 pieces of evidence showed that Davis and Northrop didn’t commit the crime and revealed DNA evidence that likely came from two other men.
A judge vacated the two men’s convictions in July 2010, after they had spent 17 years in prison.
Neither man was immediately reachable for comment.
