There are petanque players in Edmonds.
Michelle Martin, president of the Edmonds Petanque Club, says it’s a game, a simple game, like horseshoes.
“There’s a target, and you have to get as close to it as possible,” she says. “What makes it so appealing, is that you can be way ahead for a while, yet lose a second later, or vice versa.”
Nothing is decided until the last player plays the very last boule (a hollow metal ball).
“If he or she moves the aim ball or kicks an opponent’s ball out of the way, the layout of the boules — and thus your score — may change dramatically. “The official rules make provision for any eventuality while you’re playing,” Martin says. “From losing the aim ball to dogs running over the court.”
An Inaugural Edmonds Petanque Club Tournament begins at 10 a.m. Sunday at Edmonds Civic Playfield, 230 Sixth Ave. N., in Edmonds. Registration opens at 8 a.m. for two-member teams.
It costs $25 per person and that includes a T-shirt.

“We already have a lot of players,” she says. “Some of them started last year when we had the first petanque court and now with two new ones, almost everyday we have new people trying and coming back to play.”
Martin says it’s convivial and everyone enjoys the game.

It’s nice when a city is small enough to offer an all-school reunion. All classmates from Sultan High School are invited to meet at 11 a.m. Aug. 21 at Sultan Middle School, 301 High Ave.
Milton Neiffer says they will offer coffee, tea and maybe some refreshments. No need to bring anything.
His phone number is 360-793-0610 if you have any questions.
“In this economy, no telling if anyone will show up,” Neiffer says.
Optimistically, he hopes to see more than 100 folks who want to talk about old times.
