SEATTLE — The Coast Guard rescued five people from a 56-foot commercial fishing vessel that was taking on water near off the Washington coast.
The U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release that the boat known as the Taplow was 19 miles southwest of Grays Harbor Friday morning when officials received the distress call.
The caller also reported the engine room was half flooded and their pumps had stopped working.
Helicopters and boat crews delivered a pump and a rescue swimmer who went on board to help remove water. Those on board abandoned the ship when those efforts failed.
Authorities say the Taplow is believed to have sunk in over 300 feet of water with a potential of several hundred gallons of diesel onboard. No pollution had been reported as of Friday.
