WESTPORT — The Coast Guard rescued a commercial fisherman after his vessel hit a submerged object near the Westport Marina and began taking on water.
A boat crew rescued 70-year-old Michael Carroll from his 60-foot fishing vessel the Pacific Rim at about 4:15 a.m. Sunday. He was treated for hypothermia at the Westport Marina and then taken to Grays Harbor Community Hospital.
The Coast Guard station in Warrenton, Oregon, received a mayday call at 3:51 a.m., reporting the vessel was taking on water. A crew reached the vessel within about 20 minutes.
At the time of the sinking, the Pacific Rim had 250 gallons of diesel fuel on board. Pollution responders went to the scene.
A Safety Marine Information Broadcast is being transmitted to alert boaters to be on the lookout for the partially submerged vessel, which is drifting south with the tide.
