VFW sponsoring ‘Loyalty Day’
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1561 is organizing a "Loyalty Day" starting at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in downtown Arlington.
The event starts with a short parade down Olympic Avenue to Legion Park. The presentation of colors will be at noon. At 12:30 p.m., a chili and potluck dinner will be served at the VFW, 225 E. Third St.

Worn flags
being collected
The American Legion Frank Freese Post 66 of Edmonds is collecting worn and unserviceable U.S. flags for proper disposal.
Worn and faded flags will be burned by post members in a dignified fashion according to the U.S. Flag Code.
U.S. flags may be brought to Edmonds Fire Stations and deposited in receptacles until Memorial Day. Receptacles will be located at Fire Station 16, 8429 196th St. SW; Fire Station 17, 275 Sixth Ave. N.; Fire Station 20, 23009 88th Ave. W and Fire Headquarters, 121 Fifth Ave. N.
The American Legion Frank Freese Post 66 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 will present a public flag disposal ceremony at 7:30 p.m. May 17 at City Park at Third and Pine streets.

Whatcom maps
at Everett Station
The city has agreed to install two maps at Everett Station on how to get from Snohomish County to the Canadian border and to encourage travelers to use public transportation.
The maps are sponsored by the Whatcom Council of Governments and include information on public transportation, Greyhound, Amtrak, Washington State Ferries and several other modes of transportation.
The maps will include material from Everett Transit, Community Transit and Sound Transit, said Tom Hingson, transportation systems manager.
Sen. Shin speaks
to sailors at base
State Sen. Paull Shin, D.-Edmonds, was the keynote speaker Tuesday for Naval Station Everett’s Asian-Pacific Heritage Month celebration.
Shin, who was adopted by an American soldier during the Korean War, represents the 21st Legislative District, an area that includes Edmonds, Mukilteo and parts of Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace.

‘Ultimate Idol’
Singer Tony Cea became $5,000 richer at the Auburn SuperMall Saturday — and he became an "Ultimate Idol."
The Mukilteo resident beat nine contestants from across the region in the Mix 92.5 FM "Ultimate Idol" competition.
A 1995 national karaoke champion, Cea sang the Etta James classic "At Last." "It was interesting. I had never sang in a mall before. It was nerve-racking, but fun nonetheless," he said.
Cea plans to spend the money on a vacation, some shopping and a few bills. Apart from the prize, being on the radio was the best part, he said.
"It was cool. I’d like to hear more," he said. "Hopefully down the road."
Neighbors to plan summer events
The View Ridge Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight in the library at Madison Elementary School, 616 Pecks Drive.
The neighbors will discuss funding and planning for several neighborhood projects, including the Night Out Against Crime on Aug. 3.
Silver Lake Action group to meet
The Silver Lake Action Committee will hold its May meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday at Bethany at Silver Lake, 2235 Lake Heights Drive.
The group will share information on a new development going in between Safeway and Romio’s at the north end of Silver Lake.
This will be the last committee meeting until September.

Camano Island tour starts Friday
The sixth annual Camano Island Studio Tour is this weekend.
At least 27 art galleries throughout the island will welcome visitors, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday-Sunday.
The event is sponsored by Camano Arts Association, a nonprofit group, and supported by a variety of businesses in the Stanwood and Camano area.

session canceled
The Island County commissioners canceled a special session scheduled for Tuesday regarding proposed parking restrictions along Lowell Point Road near the Camano Island Trail.
The meeting was canceled because the county included incorrect directions in its legal advertisement.
A new hearing is planned but a date has not yet been announced.

Lions volunteers, members sought
The Lake Stevens Lions Club is looking for volunteers to staff the club’s Weenie Wagons during the spring and summer.
The Weenie Wagons are among the club’s primary fund-raising activities and are used at the Aquafest festival and other events.
Volunteers are welcome to join the club, which is seeking new members (women and men), but membership is not required.

Local author Gayle Rogers will be the guest during a gathering for adults at 10 a.m. Friday at the Marysville Library, 6120 Grove St.
Rogers researches for historical accuracy and combines the research with contemporary spiritual and moral values. She draws on personal psychic experiences to create characters and complex historical romance stories. She has written "My Name Was Mary," "Gladyce With A C" and "Nakoa’s Woman."
Refreshments will be provided by Friends of the Marysville Library. Her appearance is sponsored by the First Friday Book Club.

walking health fair
Valley General Hospital recently hosted a walking health fair at the East County Senior Center.
The fair was a three-month follow-up to the Walkin’ in the Rain Health Fair in January.
Walkers took advantage of free health screenings such as osteoporosis, blood pressure, and height and weight.
Snohomish
Volunteers spread play chips for city
The Snohomish Boys &Girls Club members and Starbucks employees recently volunteered to spread 40 yards of play chips at the Averill Youth Complex Tot Lot.
The job was completed in two days.

State troopers
win top awards
State Patrol Trooper Sean O’Connell was named trooper of the year for District 7, which includes Snohomish County.
O’Connell was also named district certified technical specialist of the year.
Michael Williams earned the award for district commercial vehicle enforcement officer of the year. Communications officer of the year for the district was Cindie Holmes.
Troopers in District 7 serve Snohomish, Skagit, Island, Whatcom and San Juan counties.
Longtime visitors’ center moves
The Snohomish County Tourism Bureau on Monday opened a visitors’ information center at the restored Wickers Building at Heritage Park in Lynnwood.
The park is located at 19921 Poplar Way.
The center had been located at I-5 and 128th Street in south Everett. It is staffed by 70 volunteers. The center is open, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. seven days a week, 362 days a year. The phone number is 425-776-3977.

1979 classmates planning reunion
Stanwood High School’s Class of ‘79 is looking for classmates for this summer’s class reunion.
The reunion will be 7 p.m. to midnight Aug. 21 at the Stillaguamish Grange on the Stanwood-Camano Fairgrounds, 6521 Pioneer Highway.
A back-home country dance is planned, and the Tube Kings are scheduled to perform. Spartan graduates from 1974 to 1978 are invited.
