Everett

The Kalakala

is ‘one of a kind’

An Everett man on Wednesday urged the City Council to support plans to restore the rusting ferry Kalakala here.

Steve Rodrigues hopes to moor the boat in Everett for up to three years for a $15 million restoration. City and Port of Everett officials are wary of the proposal because the Tumwater man has yet to submit a detailed plan on how he will raise the money.

They fear the boat could languish in Everett for years. Rodrigues said he won’t dock the boat in Everett if city officials don’t support his plan.

William Spani told the council Wednesday that he plans to meet with Rodrigues soon and will try to raise money from local residents and companies.

"It’s got a graceful past," Spani said of the 1935 art-deco ferry. "It’s a one-of-a-kind ship."

Council considers Everpark contract

The City Council budget committee on Tuesday discussed whether to renew a management contract for the Everpark Garage or put it out to bid.

The nonprofit Downtown Everett Association’s three-year contract with the city to run the garage expires May 1. The association won the right to run the garage in a bid process.

The city pays the association $11,333 a month to run the garage; $1,125 of that goes toward the garage’s operating expenses.

The association’s contract with the city requires it to spend any profit on downtown revitalization and on improvements on the garage, which is a reason to extend the association’s contract, said the city’s director of facilities and property management, Carlton Gipson.
