Arlington

Police station

design discussed

The city’s Planning Commission will consider approving a design review for the city’s proposed 18,000-square-foot police station, to be built at 110 E. Third St. behind City Hall. The commission meets at 7 tonight at the Arlington Boys and Girls Club, 18513 59th Ave. NE.

The new station will have a meeting room that will be available for use by the City Council and the community.

Edmonds

Sister city board needs a member

The mayor and the Sister City Commission are seeking a new commissioner. The volunteer position is for a three-year term.

A Sister City commissioner is required to attend one meeting each month, participate in committee work and join in activities involving sister city visitors from Hekinan, Japan.

It is not necessary to be a resident of Edmonds, although an interest in the city or Japan is preferred. Applications are available at City Hall, or by calling the mayor’s office at 425-771-0247.

Everett

Boulevard Bluffs neighbors to meet

The Boulevard Bluffs Neighborhood Association will meet at 7 tonight at Everett Fire Station No. 4, 5920 Glenwood Ave.

Everett police Sgt. Dan Templeman will speak about the department’s Senior Volunteer Program, in which seniors do outreach and crime prevention work and perform safety checks.

Also, Boulevard Bluffs Association chairwoman Deborah Wright is moving to a job in Mayor Ray Stephanson’s office, so the association will hold an election for a new leader.

Granite Falls

Prescription drug abuse discussed

The Granite Falls Community Coalition, a drug-prevention group, sponsors the presentation "Communities Making a Difference: Enough Is Enough" at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at Granite Falls Middle School, 305 N. Alder Ave.

The presentation is about prescription drug use and abuse, including signs and symptoms, prevalence of abuse, access, myths and stereotypes, and intervention. Speakers will include people who are dealing with prescription drug abuse.

Parents, residents, and civic and business leaders are invited.

Island County

Police honor state

Sen. Haugen

For the second year in a row, Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, D-Camano Island, has been named legislator of the year by the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs.

The law enforcement lobbying group represents more than 4,700 city and county officers representing 80 percent of the police officers in the state.

Attention to law enforcement concerns, bills introduced and accessibility are among the criteria the group uses for the award.

Lake Stevens

Boys &Girls Club lease deal signed

The Lake Stevens Lions Club and Clubs Inc. signed a lease Tuesday with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Snohomish County for the Mitchell Community Center. Construction is expected to begin in about a week on remodeling the center into the county’s 12th Boys and Girls Club.

The Lions also handed a check for $15,000 to Bill Tsoukalas, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs. The Lions had pledged to raise $5,000 a year over the next three years for the Lake Stevens club, but raised enough to pay the entire amount now. In all, the Lions have raised nearly $50,000 for the local Boys and Girls Club.

New sewer plant

to be discussed

Lake Stevens Sewer District commissioners will discuss the plan for a new wastewater treatment facility, as well as landscaping for the plant site, during a meeting at 3:30 p.m. today. The meeting will be at the district’s headquarters, 9327 Fourth St. NE, Suite 8, Everett.

The board also will review financial statements, hold an executive session to discuss property issues, the Lakemont Vista utility local improvement district 13 and a change order for a Lundeen Phase 2 lift station.

The meeting is open to the public.

Drainage district

Drainage Improvement District No. 8 commissioners will discuss the commissioner election Feb. 3 and unpaid assessments during their meeting at 7 tonight at the district office, 1911 Vernon Road.

Lynnwood

Fire assistant

candidates set

The Lynnwood Civic Services Commission Wednesday authorized a list of potential candidates for the city to interview for the open assistant fire chief position.

Fire Chief Gary Olson will begin interviewing candidates within the next two weeks, city officials said.

Marysville

Variance request public hearing

The Marysville hearing examiner will conduct a public hearing at 7 tonight on a variance request by the city to build a

3 million-gallon reservoir on city-owned property east of 71st Avenue NE and south of 44th Street NE. The reservoir would be 69 feet high in an area with a maximum base height of 35 feet.

The meeting will be in council chambers at City Hall, 1049 State Ave. It is open to the public.

Mill Creek

Kids hoops league draws 85 teams

The city kicked off its 2004 Youth Basketball League with 85 teams. Participants range from kindergarten to eighth grade.

The league plays games with the city of Everett, which has 50 teams, at Heatherwood Middle School, Gateway Middle School and three other courts in the Everett School District.

Monroe

Schools seek

parents’ input

The Monroe School District needs input from the parents of students who are struggling with reading and math. Parents and guardians are invited to a meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 4 to share their ideas at the school district administration building, 200 E. Mountlake Terrace

‘Flier stop’ could open in 2010

Staff from Sound Transit met recently with Mountlake Terrace city staff to discuss the proposed "flier stop," a project to provide express bus service from I-5 near the 236th Street park-and-ride lot.

The stop would allow faster direct bus service for commuters, while keeping some bus traffic off local streets. The Sound Transit team is working to refine the proposal and said it plans to open the freeway station in 2010.

Mukilteo

Council pursues new EMS levy

The Mukilteo City Council on Tuesday started looking into a new EMS levy, which would cost a property owner 30 to 32 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation for a six-year period. The money would pay for emergency medical services to the city. EMS services currently are provided by Everett.

The council wants to know what other jurisdictions are planning for the spring ballot, and more details of the effect a levy might have on property owners.

Voters in 2003 twice rejected a proposed permanent levy of 40 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Snohomish

Library offers event for babies

The Snohomish Public Library offers Baby and Me Storytime for infants up to 18 months old and their caregivers. Friends of the Snohomish Library sponsors the free event, which involves stories, songs and games, at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 2, 9 and 23 at 311 Maple Ave. For more information. call 360-568-2898.

Library board

to elect officers

The Sno-Isle Regional Library System board will elect officers and decide committee appointments at a meeting at 1 p.m. Monday at the system service center, 7312 35th Ave. NE, Marysville.

The board also will discuss board training and Tim Eyman’s latest tax initiative and its potential effect on the library. His proposal would decrease state property taxes by an average 25 percent.

Stanwood

Camp Killoqua registration open

Camp Fire USA’s Camp Killoqua south of Stanwood is registering kids for its summer programs. The camp offers resident and day camp options for families that need summer activities for their children.

Programs include river rafting, mountain climbing, horses, sailing, bike trips and arts and crafts. A special one-week session is offered for kids who have lost a loved one. Weekly fees range from $100 to $550, and financial assistance is available to those who qualify.
