Rotary bypasses lunch to help at food bank

Their regular lunchtime meeting room was busy. So on Dec. 3, members of the Rotary Club of Everett instead headed to Volunteers of America to help box food for food bank clients. Nineteen Rotary members helped with the holiday packaging.

VFW sends holiday cheer to troops in Afghanistan

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1040 in Lynnwood and its Ladies Auxiliary recently collected and boxed 28 packages of candy, nuts, playing cards, books, magazines and dental supplies. The boxes are being shipped to U.S. servicemen and women stationed at the Forward Operating Base at Fenty, Afghanistan.

The VFW Post will have another shipment going to Camp Sabalu Harrison in Afghanistan later this month.

Grange helps foster children

Cedar Valley Grange 306, of Lynnwood, collected blankets, homemade bags and various toiletry items to give to Abe and Sarah’s Children, a ministry of the Everett’s First Baptist Church.

Abe and Sarah’s Children provides the bags stocked with blankets, hygiene items, pajamas and stuffed animals to the Department of Social and Health Services offices in Snohomish County. The bags are given to children who are being placed in foster care.

This is one of several community projects supported by the Cedar Valley Grange, which has been in the Lynnwood area for more than 100 years.

Square dance aids veterans’ cause

The Dudes and Dolls Square Dance Club of Lynnwood added a veteran’s theme to its annual November dance. This year, the club collected donations to benefit Fisher House in Seattle, a “comfort home” for military family members who have loved ones receiving medical treatment at the VA hospital next door. The square dance club raised $495 for Fisher House.

Retiring fire captain, firefighters honored

Snohomish County Fire District 1 Capt. Bruce Davis and firefighters Wayne Kindig and Mike Smith are to be honored at a retirement ceremony Friday.

The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. at Martha Lake Fire Station 21, 16819 13th Ave. W., Lynnwood. Parking will be available in the north and east parking lots of the neighboring Christ the Rock Church.

Davis retired with 40 years of service in the district. At the time of his retirement, Davis served as a training officer and was coordinator of the volunteer program. He was a hazardous-materials technician and a member of the Fire District 1 Honor Guard.

Kindig has 22 years of service with the district. He is assigned to Brier Fire Station 18.

Smith retired with 22 years of service in the district. At the time of his retirement, he was assigned to Lake Serene Fire Station 23.

Camano volunteer firefighters receive badges

Camano Island Fire and Rescue’s newest volunteers and part-time firefighters received their badges at a ceremony Nov. 25.

New part-time firefighters are Matt Brown, Tyler Hoglund, Tucker Rockwell, Scott Webb, and Andrew Yu. New volunteers are Travis Mason and Ryan Striplin, former firefighter cadets from Stanwood High School’s cadet program.

Grant helps provide kids with beds

St. Vincent de Paul North Sound Council recently received a $5,000 donation from the Seattle-based Norcliffe Foundation for St. Vincent’s Beds for Children Program. All of the funds will purchase beds for children who often don’t have one.
